So I go to YouTube in my lovely FireFox browser, and to my delight saw Shad K's music video "The Old Prince Still Lives at Home" at the top of the Featured Videos list! Shad is a Canadian rapper (London, ON) whose talent is a breath of fresh air in today's rap industry.

So I reached for the PrtSc button to take a screen shot and at that moment the same video scrolled up into the Videos Being Watched Now ticker! The 2fer result is below (click pic to enlarge):

Yesterday I was reading about how the media has obituaries on file for various public figures, which is not surprising, but also that it is becoming more common for them to keep obits on file for some people under the age of 30. [Article by John Rogers, AP]

Today I read the unfortunate news of Heath Ledger's passing [Actor Heath Ledger Found Dead in New York Apartment] and one of my first thoughts was about the article I had read the previous day.

It's interesting that the demand for [almost-]instant information makes it so that media corporations need to create all these obits. I welcome your comments on this, if you think it's right/wrong, and how you'd feel if you were famous and discovered you were "wild" or "old" enough to have your obituary on file.

Midnight Snack

Recently I went to the kitchen recently to make a sandwich, and found myself confronted with a package with only three pieces of bread left. Somehow none of them were crusty end-pieces, which is a story in and of itself, but more importantly was the mission I now had to complete:
The Double Decker Cold Cut Sandwich

So I set upon my task with the following ingredients:
-three pieces of home made bread
-smoked black forest ham
-seasoned, oven roasted beef
-alternating slices of cheddar and mozzarella cheese
-dill pickles
-mixed lettuce
-butter (margarine, whatever)
-a few dashes of seasoning salt

When I was finished I stepped back, took a look at my creation and thought two things:
1. Yum!
2. I am thankful that I live in the first world.

I found this to be an interesting read: The Pirate Bay Details Charges Against Media Companies

What do you think? Will this story blow up in the media? Will there be significant legal action against these corporations? Will nobody care? Will anybody get to hear it in the first place?

Honestly, in the short run I'm mostly curious about the reaction to this story... If people think the media companies are being two-faced, if they think The Pirate Bay website is being silly, etc. I find it interesting because the ones classified or stereotyped as "criminals" to some are now challenging the "legit big businesses".

A little bit of CNN and Hip hop
CNN did an investigative report or something on hip hop music, asking whether it was "art or poison". If someone has a link to the original segment post it in the comments (please? it is online?)... but here is Chuck D doing an interview later on, being interviewed by some folks who [also] felt Chuck's viewpoint was poorly presented.

April 16th Shootings at Virginia Tech Campus

I'm sitting here watching CNN as this story develops: http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/04/16/vtech.shooting/index.html

As I'm writing this I need to change my post title from "One dead, 20 injured" to "20 killed in shootings at Virginia Tech Campus". It was such a sudden jump and even the reporter said there was an audible gasp at the press conference and the question has to be asked twice. Yes, twenty dead.

As for the suspect(s) there are mixed reports... it used to be 1 suspect in custody and searching for another, but now it is felt this was the work of one shooter who was found dead in Norris Hall.

I'll probably update more later. They're about to show the recording of the conference...

Latest update:
After not following the story for a few hours the number of those dead has risen from 20 to 32, as well as 29 injured. The story keeps getting worse and worse, and after watching the latest press conference it looks like later we will get more information about the shooter (apparently a young looking Asian a little under 6 feet in height) and whether or not there was a second shooter ("a person of interest" who may have been involved at the first shooting scene).
I'll leave you to find more information from news sources... there's not much more to say... but so much left to ask.

My sympathies go out to the victims and their families, as well as all of those affected.

More on Windows Vista Compatibility

Hopefully someone out there can find this information useful. I'm using a Toshiba Satellite A100 series laptop (new as of late summer 2006). 1.6GHz, 1gb RAM, Intel 945GM Express Chipset Family, 100gb HDD. I have the hard drive partitioned and am able to choose WinXP (Home, was too lazy to put on Pro) or Vista when the computer starts (dual boot FTW!).

[Nb: last updated Feb.7/2007]
Those compatible and of good compatibility (totally getting both words in there for the indexing spiders, lol):
-Avast 4 Home Edition
-Adobe Reader 8
-WinAmp 5.24
-Spybot Search & Destroy 1.4
(disclaimer: These are programs I haven't had any Vista-caused problems with; it doesn't mean they have been publically declared Vista compatible)

Partially functional:
-ePrompter [Crashes when executed. Delete all .epm files and it will work but need to receive your entire inbox again (only once after deleting .epm files). Just click "Mark all as read". Moving the .ini did nothing for me.
-Babo Violent 2 (official forums @ www.baboviolent.net)
-WinRar (works fine except the context menu that is accessed via right click)

Life with Vista [and XP]

Over the weekend I partitioned the HDD in my laptop (new as of Summer 2006) and installed Windows Vista Business Edition such that I can boot up my computer into either Vista or XP (dual boot). I've decided to record some of my problems/triumphs on the blog in case they're helpful to anyone. Feel free to post any questions or suggestions in the Comments.

After partitioning my hard drive the Vista install went very smoothly (suggestion: scan your computer for spyware and virus before upgrading/installing, then turn off your anti-virus before starting). Fortunately all drives that I've needed so far came with the installation so upon first boot I have graphics, internet, and sound. The first round(s) of Windows Update went fine except for an important looking update for Intel chipset which failed so I'll probably update it off a website.

The 3D Flip feature is neat but it's not very handy for me to use because of where my WinKey is. The QuickLaunch icon for it makes it a bit nicer but I'd love to be able to assign it to my middle mouse button click; which I'll try todo with IntelliPoint or something.

As for compatibility, my favourite game at the moment did not work (www.baboviolent2.net and www.rndlabs.ca). I heard that Firefox doesn't work well with Vista so I'm going to wait a bit before trying out Mozilla (besides, I haven't used IE7 much so I'll get a chance to play around with that). I'm about to try ePrompter (email checking program) so we'll see how that goes!
edit: After updating some Intel chipset drivers the Babo Violent games both work pretty fine (they run and I can play, haven't tried much more than that). Also, I downloaded WinRar and it seems to have problems running from the Right Click / Context popup menus.

There should be more in later posts.

Microsoft Windows XP and Vista

Because of what I studied at University I get a number of free downloads and products from an official University/Microsoft website. Amongst the products available is Windows XP (Home and Pro Editions) and recently the new Windows Vista. The XP download was one CD but the Vista download is five CD (since they haven't got it configured for DVDs yet).
So if, when I eventually try out Vista, the 5 CD Windows operating system isn't 5 times as good as the 1 CD Windows OS the cynic in me will be disappointed. There better be a bunch of amazing easter eggs or something hidden in there..... five CDs... ugh. Thank goodness for DVDs.

I woke up Christmas morning to hear news of James Brown passing away. Tis a real pity... the man had such an influence on the development of hiphop music, breakdancing (bboying), and more. All I have to say about his death, and I think it speaks for itself, is this:

Time for a little family boasting! :D
My younger sister is on a basketball scholarship to Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. She's a freshman and got her first start in a game tonight. My family and a couple others were watching and she played a great game.

As you can see from the box score above, she was the game's top scorer with 20 points (from 9/10 shooting), 2 rebounds, 1 block, and 1 assist that the stats keepers failed to credit her for. Anyways, the highlight of the game was when the game announcer declared "Miranda is HOT!" after she scored her fifth bucket (out of five shots in the first half).

Common Sense to the Rescue

I'm going to try to keep this short. Also, in the name of keeping it short, all structure has been abandoned in favour of rapidly rambling. Additionally, any usual attempts to rectify certain grammar and spelling mistakes have been cancelled.

Now, I've seen articles in various [Ontarian] newspapers regarding the story about a new law which would allow alcohol in club/bar restrooms (UWO Gazette link, others available via Google news [I know the London Freep ran a story on Oct.17]). The idea is that women would be able to bring their drinks to the bathroom with them and thus avoid getting date raped. Apparently, and this is news to me, women were leaving their drinks unattended and then coming back to them and finishing the contents.

HOW STUPID IS THAT!?

Trying to keep this short, I'll assume we all know why such an action is stupid. What I can't understand though is why this is such an issue. Do these people not have friends that they can have watch over their drink (friends they know, not random people they just met that night)? Do they have pea-sized bladders such that they cannot wait until they've finished the drink? I'm assuming all of these people are over the age of 19 since they're drinking in a bar, so they've got to have some sort of bladder control. Maybe goto the bathroom before you get your next drink since you really should have some sort of idea if you're going to have to go pee-pee or touch up your hair/makeup soon? This is a bar we're talking about! The drinks aren't any huge 1.5 L Gatorade bottle! At most it's probably a 300-500ml beer or cooler bottle, or if it's in a cup even less (especially later in the night when they start giving you those teeny little plastic cups like they think you're too drunk to notice that you're now paying the same price for 1/2 the product). If it's really such an issue and you absolutely MUST go right then, take a few drinks from your cup and abandon the last little bit. Le sigh... if I'm just completely overlooking something then somebody please blast me in the comments section.

Laws shouldn't be made to protect stupid people from themselves, they should be made to protect the rest of us from them.

The saddest part about this whole post is that I spent the most energy deciding if "pee-pee" should have a dash in it.

Today I was waiting at a bus stop on the side of a busy road near a stoplight. This car pulls up to a red light and the driver, a good looking girl around my age, glances out the window towards me as she's slowing to a stop. She then does a double take and looks at me and almost crashes into the back of the car in front of her! Once safely stopped her and her friend are looking out the window checking me out, but aren't sure if I see them. Yesterday my girlfriend said I looked "really hot today", and last night at a club I was dancing with three cuties at once (the girlfriend and two mutual friends).

A Very Late Project

Last week I finally saw the Blair Witch Project. I say "finally" because it's the biggest financial success in terms of production-cost to gross-income ratio, and also remembering how much I heard about it when it had just come out.
Anyways, the only 2 good parts are as follows:
a) When it's just Mike and Heather left and they're trying to decide where to walk next. Walking South for a day got them back to where they started so they were debating whether to try West or East. Mike was all depressed (understandable) and mumbled something about the Wicked Witch from the Wizard of Oz and Heather says that she's the Wicked Witch of the West. Mike mumbles that they should proceed East because of that.
b)The very very very ending of the movie, with Mike standing in the corner just like one of the townies had said in the interviews at the beginning of the movie.

Snakes on a Plane goof?

Forget all the Snakes on a Plane shiznat. Here's what you need to know:
[WARNING! HERE BE SPOILERS!]
Near the very end when the witness gets bitten in the chest by a deadly snake, Bad-Ass Mother Fucker (BMF) Samuel L. Jackson shoots the dude square in the chest, right through the snake that bit him. Dude falls backwards but is A-OK because he's wearing a bullet proof vest. Of course BMF knew this because he's probably the smart mutha who put the bullet proof vest on the witness that's under FBI protection. The bullets kill the snake but witness dude is okay because he's got the slug stopper on.
However, earlier on in the movie just after the snakes have dropped from the oxygen masks, BMF's partner in FBI crime goes down to investigate all the ruckus and finds SNAKES, ON A MOTHER FUCKIN' PLANE!!! Suddenly he (BMF's partner) gets bit in the chest by a copper head or whatever venomous snake. This dude later dies... and we see his chest exposed with the bite marks on his pecs. What I don't get is:
Why isn't the on-duty FBI agent, who is transporting a witness who needs dire protection from a well known and well connected crime lord, wearing a bullet proof vest himselt!?.

Last month I bought a new laptop but it wasn't until this evening that I finally created and put in place my own Windows Sound Scheme. The alert sounds, Windows Start Up / Shut Down / Logon / Logoff tunes, critical stop alert sounds, device attach/remove/failed alerts, recycling bin emptying, everything! The following is a list of the sound effects and sound bytes used:

Asterisk & Critical Stop alerts: Riley Freeman from The Boondocks saying "Wait, hold up" (from the A Huey Freeman Christmas episode, Riley was writing a letter to Santa and needed an eraser).
Default Beep: Again from The Boondocks, a white teacher trying to teach Kwanzaa stuff at the public school during Christmas. He's attempting to get the kids to participate in a chant and is yelling, "Harambi!" (which I'm most likely spelling terribly wrong).
Device Connect (ie: USB devices): An announcer-type voice enthusiastically proclaiming "Here we go!"; from Blackalicious - Chemical Calisthenics.
Device Disconnect: An echoey voice saying "Drrrop"; from The Pharcyde - Drop.
Device Failed to Connect: The fill from Bob James - Take Me to The Mardi Gras, more well known as the "song with the water glasses being played with spoons sound" by Run DMC called Peter Piper featuring Jam Master Jay (the turntables might wobble but they don't fall down!).
Exclamation alert: Strong Bad saying "Bshht! The Double Deuce."
Exit Windows: Strong Bad again, this time saying "It's about time! Why don't you go outside or something? Nerd."
Start Windows: The THX "Deep Note" thing that appears before movies (Digitally Mastered!).
Windows Logoff: A quick DJ scratch then a voice saying "You are ready to go on [echo: go on, go on, go on]"; from Blackalicious again.
Windows Logon: The most famous section of James Brown - Funky Drummer; "One, Two, Three, Four, Hit it! [the funky drummer drumming]...".
Empty Recycle Bin: Strong Bad yelling his trademark "DELETED!"
MSN Contact Online: "[quick DJ scratch] Y'all know the name!"
MSN New Mail: Before one of Strong Bad's email episodes (I'm too lazy to look up which one) he says "Awwwwwwwwwwww EMAIL!!!" and then some heavy rock riff comes in for a few seconds.

MSN New Mobile Message: Strong Bad, before checking his email another day/episode, says in great wonder and amazement "Oh! Electronic mail!"

The only ones I want to customize but haven't are the Low Battery and Critical Battery alerts for the laptop. Otherwise I'm all set.
As well, in the next week I hope to finally spray paint the stencil I designed for the top of the lappy. I won't tell you what it is (I'll post pics when it's done), but it involves the 1980s, and the colours red, white, and black.

I was walking home from the bus stop recently and saw that the speed awareness program/things were still there. The sign said it was Project P.E.E.P., which stands for something that I forget (Public Enforcement and Encouragement Program?). Anyways, there were for sure no sensors laid down on the road, so I gave it a half hearted run-by with laptop in hand and backpack on, well, my back. Nothing happened for awhile but just as I was about to give up since I was only 8 or 9 feet away, a bright number flashed on the display.
It clocked me at 19km/hour.

There is one of those portable displays on the side of a road near my house that says "Your Speed Is" then shows a digital read out of your speed as you approach. Generally there is a tube laid across the road nearby with sensors inside that read a vehicle's speed, but I couldn't see any. Maybe I just missed it, but maybe it's a radar gun or whatever-style one. If the latter is the case I am very tempted to try running, skating, and biking by it to see what I register. But then again, maybe not.

I'm always up til 2 or 3 during the school year and often later during the summer (or when I don't have anything early the next day). Lately though I haven't been doing much work (I'm self employed) and since I just paid tuition I think I should get back into it heavy until school starts and my time is once again limited.

Today while at work I went onto Symantec's website and waded around the Support section. For the second time in a row the Live Chat (with Tech Support Personnel) link was nowhere to be found, although I knew it existed. I ended up having to use Google to find that section of Symantec's website, and all I wanted was to ask why I had an expired subscription when the legal software (Norton Anti-Virus) I got for my boss had just been purchased and installed (note: the software comes with a 1 year subscription).
Anyways, I finally get to the Live Chat section and I'm number 13 in a queue of people waiting to be served. Over the next 10-15 minutes I waited patiently until I was first in line. Then the Live Chat display suddenly changes and informs me that "There are no tech support agents currently available" and that I should "Try again later". I was rather confused as to how 12 people in front of me didn't have to "try again later", but I did. So I tried it again, and sure enough it told me the same thing. Looks like every single one of Norton's customer service employees took lunch... all at the same time... at 9 o'clock in the morning...

In other news, Tennessee Valley has discovered that young people have this new thing called "Friends With Benefits". This article is sad in more ways than one. I came across the link on Fark and one of my favourite "wth?" comments was the following:

It seems that an article was written to Sister 2 Sister magazine by a Caucasian woman who requested a response from black men. I'm so glad she got what she asked for (and more) !!! Read on...........

So great to find this black Prince defending us like this. This letter was written in response to an article in the Sister 2 Sister Magazine (January 2000 issue).

Dear Jamie:
I'm sorry but I would like to challenge some of your Black male readers. I am a White female who is engaged to a Black male-good-looking, educated and loving. I just don't understand a lot of Black female's attitudes about our relationship. My man decided he wanted me because the pickings amongst Black women were slim to none. As he said they were either too fat, too loud, too mean, too argumentative, too needy, too materialistic or carrying too much excess baggage. Before I became engaged, whenever I went out I was constantly approached by Black men, willing to wine and dine me and give me the world. If Black women are so up in arms about us being with their men, why don't they look at themselves and make some changes. I am tired of the dirty looks I get and snide remarks when we're out in public. I would like to hear from some Black men about why we are so appealing and coveted by them. Bryant Gumbel just left his wife of 26 years for one of us. Charles Barkley, Scottie Pippen, the model Tyson Beckford, Montell Williams, Quincy Jones, James Earl Jones, Harry Belafonte, Sydney Poitier, Kofi Anan, Cuba Gooding Jr., Don Cornelius, Berry Gordy, Billy Blanks, Larry Fishburne, Wesley Snipes...I could go on and on. But, right now, I'm a little angry and that is why I wrote this so hurriedly. Don't be mad with us White women because so many of your men want us. Get your acts together and learn from us and we may lead you to treat your men better. If I'm wrong, Black men, let me know.

I would like to respond to the letter written by A Disgusted White Girl. Let me start by saying that I am a 28-year old black man. I graduated from one of the most prestigious universities in Atlanta,Georgia with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Management. I have a good job at a major corporation and have recently purchased a house. So, I consider myself to be among the ranks of successful black men. I will not use my precious time to slander white people. I just want to set the record straight of why black men date white women.
Back in the day, one of the biggest reasons why black men dated white women was because they were considered easy. The black girls in my neighborhood were raised in the church. They were very strict about when they lost their virginity and who they lost it to. Because of our impatience to wait, brothers would look for someone who would give it up easy without too much hassle. So, they turned to the white girls.
Nowadays, in my opinion, a lot of brothers date white women because they are docile and easy to control. A lot of black men, because of insecurities, fears, and overall weaknesses, have become intimidated by the strength of our black women. We are afraid that our woman will be more successful than us, make more money than us, drive nicer cars and own bigger houses. Because of this fear, many black men look for a more docile woman. Someone we can control. I have talked to numerous black men and they continuously comment on how easy it is to control and walk over their white women. I just want to set the record straight. I want A Disgusted White Girl to know that not all successful black men date white women. Brothers like Ahmad Rashad, Denzel Washington, Michael Jordan, Morris Chestnut, Will Smith, Blair Underwood, Samuel Jackson, and Chris Rock all married strong black women. And, to flip the script, there are numerous white men, in and out of the spot light, who openly or secretly desire black women over white women. Ted Danson, Robert DeNiro, and David Bowie to name a few. I just don't want a disgusted white girl to be misinformed. Stop thinking that because you are white that you are some type of goddess. Remember, when black Egyptian Queens like Hatsepshut and Nitorcris were ruling Dynasties and armies of men in Egypt,you were over in the caves of Europe eating raw meat and beating each other over the head with clubs. Read your history. It was the black woman that taught you how to cook and season your food. It was the black woman that taught you how to raise your children. It was black women who were breastfeeding and raising your babies during slavery. It is the black woman that had to endure watching their fathers, husbands, and children beaten, killed, and thrown in jail. Black women were born with two strikes against them: being black and being a woman. And, through all this, Still They Rise! It is because of the black women's strength, elegance, power, love and beauty that I could never date anyone except my black Queen. It is not just the outer beauty that captivates and draws me to them. It is not the fact that they come in all shapes, sizes, colors and shades that I love them. Their inner beauty is what I find most appealing about black women. Their strong spirit, loving and nurturing souls, their integrity, their ability to overcome great obstacles, their willingness to stand for what they believe in, and their determination to succeed and reach their highest potential while enduring great pain and suffering is why I have fallen in love with black women. I honestly believe that your anger is geared more toward jealousy and envy than snotty looks. If this were not so, then why do you continuously go to tanning salons to darken your skin? If you are so proud to be white, then why don't you just be happy with your pale skin? Why do you continue to inject your lips, hips, and breasts with unnatural and dangerous substances so you can look fuller and more voluptuous? I think that your anger is really a result of you wanting to have what the black woman has. BOTTOM LINE: If I were looking for a docile woman. Someone I can walk over and control, I would give you a call. But, unfortunately, I am looking for a Virtuous Woman. Someone that can be a good wife and mother to my children. Someone who can be my best friend and understands my struggles.
I am looking for a soul mate. I am looking for a sister and; unfortunately, you do not and CANNOT fit the bill. No offense taken, none given.

While some parts of that email forward/magazine article were true, even if somewhat stereotypical, I believe it, and the response, miss the real issue at hand.
For those of you who don't know me, I'm a 21 year old black male who has been with his white girlfriend for over a year. I'm with her because she's the person who I fell in love with, and I fell in love with her for all the various reasons/things I like about her. In the past I've been involved with or (wanted to be involved with / had crushes on) girls that were black, white, asian, latina...
All I'm saying is that I, and hopefully most people, date or love a person based on that person's qualities/characteristics and their relationship with that person; not based on their race or ethnic background. Why define a person by their race, hasn't that caused enough problems in this world?

So I have 3 tests/midterms this week (Spanish, Computer Science Databases, and Statistics) and I should be studying. Of course, I also have an assignment due in the middle of it all, as well as a semi-random breakdance performance downtown on Friday night. Add a desire to draw/sketch a lot lately, workout more, and a 1 year anniversary with the cutest girl in the world who is also so good to me (mushy mushy, I know) and I'd say I've got quite the week and a bit ahead of me.
Sin embargo, life is busy and life is good.

My New Favourite Olympic Event

So last week I had three exams in 12 hours, and [excuses excuses] I've finally gotten a chance to breathe; and apparently part of breathing is blogging (however, those 3 exams in 12 hours was just pure evil).
Basically the only event I watched this time around for the [Torino] Olympics was snowboarding. Actually, I only watched Women's snowboarding. I was going to watch the Canadian men's hockey team win gold but, yeah, that didn't pan out and the ladies had to do all the work and uphold the Canadian image of hockey goodness (good work girls!).
Anyways, as I was saying, the half pipe was alright but to be honest the men's snowboard halfpipe is more exciting. However, I found pure delight in the event called Women's Snowboard Cross. It's basically like motocross but on snowboards. They start at the top of the hill, then 4 competitors at a time race down a track that consists of sharp turns, hills, and jumps. It's very exciting to watch. Plus, as a bonus, a good number of the snowboard ladies are rather cute; and when they get to the bottom of the hill they take off their helmets and, in the spirit of good sportsmanship, all get together and have a big group hug; all smiles and snowbunnies.
Now that's a sport.

In other news, if you're in London, grab tickets for Rock the Spot 3 coming up this Saturday. Last I heard there were only 35 advance tickets left, and showing up on game day at the door w/out a ticket will probably mean you go home sad and breakdance-eventless. If you make it out, you just might recognize the event's Master of Ceremonies. ;)

Traffic Laws for Pedestrians

So last night I was the smart boy who had a spanish essay due the next morning but decided to go over to his girlfriend's house to do homework. Between ordering pizza and other unmentionables, any real progress on said essay was not recorded until about 12:30am. Needless to say, knowing that I had to work at 9am the following morning makes me look even more foolish.
The end result is a rather tired dazzy this fine Thursday...Wednesday. So in the true style of all cranky tired people, this [hopefully short] post will mostly be me bitching. About people. Walking. Or rather, not walking.
This is an ongoing issue, but it comes forth today a) because it has happened to me multiple times today and b) because I'm tired, and slightly cranky.
Let me put it like this: when you're driving down the road and you engine dies, you get a flat, you need to beat the misbehaving child in the backseat, or you get a ring on your cellie (hint hint), what do you do? You pull over to the side of the road. If at all possible any person with any sort of common sense will pull over to the side of the road so that as they call CAA/AAA or change their flat they aren't in the way of traffic. Same goes for people driving slower, whether because they're a slow driver or they're in the midst of moving lots of fragile glassware, they [should] drive in the right lane so normal traffic can continue along.
The same idea applies to sidewalks and hallways. ESPECIALLY the sidewalks and hallways at a university campus, such as the University of Western Ontario (hint hint). There are 25-30 thousand students attending the school, plus professors, researchers, and anybody else going about their business on campus. Therefore, wouldn't it make sense that if you bump into some friends and stop to chat that you move over to the side or somewhere out of the way instead of in the middle of a busy path, in front of the main doors of a busy library, or in the middle of a sidewalk which has deep snow or mud on either side of it? Apparently not at my campus. Same goes for a group of 4 friends walking 4 persons across/wide and shoulder to shoulder, or groups walking very slow. You are not a human bulldozer. *angry frowny face*

In happier(?) news, Superbowl is coming. I havn't watched a single football game since I can't remember when, although it's good fun to play with some friends now and then, but I'll be watching this year's Superbowl. Haven't decided whether or not I'm going to make a friendly wager with a couple buddies though; I'm not really into the gambling thing. I mean, once in awhile I do, but if I do I want to make sure I'm right. I bet on the latest US Presidential election and won. I didn't bet on the last 2 Superbowls or the latest Canadian election, however I was correct for all of those. *shrugs* If I make a prediction I'll post it. The last time I was blatantly wrong was when I bet a friend one thousand drunken dollars that the older black actor in Deep Blue Sea is Morgan Freeman, not Samuel L. Jackson. Sammy J's full head of hair in that movie is what threw me off. :S

Lock Mother Nature Away

For this post you need to know two things:
a) I live in Canada (in London, Ontario to be exact)
b) It snows in Canada (except for Vancouver. Vancity rocks and I'm moving there later)
So, winter this year has been weird in terms of weather. It has snowed a few times and we've gotten a couple mini-blizzards, but for the most part (especially since the New Year) there hasn't been snow on the ground for more than 2 days. And occasionally it'll get really warm (for January in Canada). Basically it's been alternating between being damn cold (with or without snow) and being mild spring bust-out-the-Tshirt weather (again, with or without snow); so I'm starting to think Mother Nature is going crazy like she's smoked too much opium (or breathed in too much pollution/emissions).

Yesterday and today's weather solidified this suspicion. Yesterday it's suddenly real cold again and the winds are blowing around on overdrive and we get a whole bunch of snow all at once. A little unexpected, but hey, it is January in Canada after all. Then today when I get ready to head out of the house for the day I bust out my thick winter gloves that I hadn't needed for a bit. As I step outside, bracing myself for the cold, I suddenly realize that there's not a cloud in the sky, sun is shining, and it's really warmish out. The snow's all melting and I take off my winter coat while waiting for the bus. The sun is giving me that "Ahhhh, sun! :D" warmth on my skin.
Yesterday it was a freezing cold blizzard and the very next day it's suddenly spring. That doesn't happen in January. And for this final straw I am convinced that Mother Nature needs to be locked away in the crazy house.

I am a big fan of Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes comic strip that ran for about 10 years in the 1980's and 1990's and have a nice little collection of the published books in my bedroom. One of my favo[u]rite segments of the comic is when Calvin goes outside during the winter and makes snowmen. But for anybody that knows what this kid Calvin is like, they know that his snow sculpture are rather... creative to say the least.
Anyways, I've stumbled across a webpage that contains many of the snowman art comic strips all on one page. It brought me great joy to reminisce and read all of these at once; and yes I will share the love with you! (pops open in a new window)

How To Avoid Red Eye in Photographs

First off, I realized that I haven't posted a picture on my blog since early November so today I present you with an illustrated guide on: How to Avoid Red Eye (right, click to enlarge). The Answer of course is to be black. Black people don't get red eye. Nobody quite knows why; it's just one of the great mysteries of the world. However, I am sensitive to the fact that not all of us are black, and therefore I have the following revolutionary piece of advice: don't look at the camera. Looking away from the camera not only avoids red eye in photos that you decide to grace with your presence, but gives you an air of superiority that states "Sure I'm in your picture, but my attention is elsewhere". Additionally you'll be the only cool kid in the picture without red eye, unless you happen to be chillen with some black people, in which case you're pretty cool anyways. :P
In the picture above you can see that I have managed to avoid any case of red eye using my patented Triple Threat Red Eye Reduction Combo. 1. Looking away from the camera. 2. Pointing at the camera. 3. Being black.
Yes, pointing at the camera does indeed help to reduce red eye as it is a gesture of authority over the flash, letting it know who's boss and thus making it respect you by not giving you any red eye. For more on the Pointing at the Camera Style please read the next paragraph.
Observe the 2nd photo (click to enlarge) of myself, a friend, and a birthday girl wearing a princess-like tiara. Notice how, being black, I can stare straight into the camera without the ill effects of Sir Red Eye. And just to show the flash, I pointed at the camera anyways; cause I'm cool like that. Notice the man in the yellow hat putting his hands together in glorious unred-eyed praise for my tactics. My friend, who is crouching, has the right idea, albeit in the wrong direction, as she is pointing at my nipple (as well as trying to lick it... or something). Therefore I raised my foot towards the camera in an attempt to cover her virgin eyes as well, but as you can see it didn't quite work. The birthday girl simply squinted, a tactic often used when a person is either very happy, very drunk, or both.
Now go forth, and be advocates and luminaries of the red eye reduced way!

So yes. You all know about this "Saugeen Stripper". I won't spew any facts or dispell any fiction here. I heard about it during November, then in mid December read an article when a Toronto newspaper finally carried the article.
The article, dated Dec.13th, read: "The University of Western Ontario is investigating an incident in which a female first-year student performed a full striptease and lap dance last week."
The main point of this blog is a "small" detail where the article says the event occurred "last week" (so early December from the article's point of view) when the event actually occurred in October. So this one goes out to the media for being oh so on top of things and always accurate...
Actually, the point of this blog was to get the words Saugeen Stripper onto my blog cause I know how search engines go. Hooah!

We Hurt Ourselves

Just a quick venting before my day of studying...

Unless I didn't watch enough nature documentaries growing up, I believe it's true that most animal species don't kill their own kind. Sure there are the cases where a parent may eat the children, or males duel during mating season, or members fight violently over territory; but these are not the norm and are not always fatal.
We humans, on the other hand, seem to have an uncanny knack for killing and harming ourselves. We are good enough at it that we have a statistic for murder rates in every locale and "solve" many of our political and greedy monetarily related problems through wars. Looking back in history we see how we've "explored" and "conquered" by landing in new lands and oppressing the people that reside there, sometimes destroying their culture and wiping them out.
Racism is another manifestation of human self-hating. Riots and beatings and killings during the civil rights era, riots today in France and Australia (which is what set me off on this topic, click link) involving people hating people. Hitler and his master race, and everything Axis troops did during WWII. City streets for the past decades and decades seeing bloodshed from rival gangs. I've never heard of a battle in some forest where the Grizzly Bears wanted to rid the forest of the "lowly" Brown Bears. Genocides in Rwanda, Darfur, East Timor, and more. I wouldn't be surprised if the #1 killer of humans was humans and human-induced causes (ie: smoking, pollution). I could go on and on.
But I won't. I'll just leave it at that. There are other things I want to touch on (how we're quite possibly slowly "living" ourselves into extinction) but that's for another post. This post however, is more about questions and [obvious] observations than answers, unfortunately. People killing people, people beating people, people hating people, people robbing people, people raping people..... maybe we need to

When I have a sweaty ass and it's uncomfortable I tend to call it "swamp ass". The worse swamp ass that I can remember was in high school after playing basketball during lunch (and I could dunk with style back then too). After running around the entire lunch period I'd change from nice light shorts back into heavy jeans, race to class, and have to sit down on my swamp ass for 90 minutes. Most uncomfortable. Then, when I stood up, all the people behind me (including the hot girls) could see my boxers and jeans sticking to my swamp ass in a pseudo-wedgie style that only swamp ass can portray. :S

Milk / Melk / Malk

So I was at my girlfriend's house making dinner like a good boyfriend and I came across an interesting question. But first, let me explain how this question arose.

She shares a house with 4 cool guys (shoutout time! Ajay, Donny, Earl, Mikey!) and everybody buys their own groceries. This specific evening I'm cooking and am in need of 1 cup of milk. So I open the fridge, where milk is usually found, and find myself facing a choice between 2 milk containers. Usually I just eat/use whatever is my gf's but in this case I was ignorant as to which milk container was her's. So I did the only fair thing any level-headed male who is in the kitchen would do. I used both containers. That's right, just pour half of the cup from milk container numero uno and filled the other half of the cup with the second milk container.

Now this is where the question presented itself: the one milk container was 1% and the other was 2%. Since I mixed the milk 1/2 and 1/2 I was curious as to what "percent" the milk mixture technically was. Donny, who happened to be in the kitchen during this whole process, and I debated this phenomenon and the following possibilies presented themselves:

1% milk plus 2% milk obviously creates 3% milk

I only used 1/2 of the 1% and 1/2 of the 2%. Both are diluted with each other and thus creating 1.5% milk (0.5% + 1.0%)

the 1% milk, being the weaker of the milks, is overtaken and filled out by the 2%, resulting in 1 cup of 2% milk mixture

So, if you can shed some light on this mystical milk mix-up please, do leave a comment. I personally favour the 2nd possibility (1.5% milk) but there may even be others I don't know of.

Police Brutality on the Streets of London

An unedited email I came across this week. I can't absolutely testify to the validity of this report, but for what it's worth I personally feel that it's probably rather truthful. Take from this what you want and act accordingly.

"Good day, I write to inform you and also to solicit potential witnesses to an incident that ocurred at the corner of Richmond and Kent this past Sunday, October 9 shortly before midnight.

I was walking along Richmond St. with my younger brother after the Audioslave concert at the JLC, when I witnessed a police pursuit on foot, followed by a brutal attack. An on-looker had tackled the suspect at the corner near Jack's Bar, then the uniformed police officer proceeded to deliver several punches to the face and stomach of the suspect while he lay motionless on the ground. The officer then sat the suspect up, and delivered a swift knee to the young man's face.

At that point a female officer arrived in a paddy wagon, and the two cops began shouting at the suspect to get on his feet. Standing about five feet away from them, I stated that it would be difficult for the man to get up after he had been kneed in the face. The male officer then quickly approached and shoved me with both of his hands and told me to "get lost." Backing away, I then politely requested the officer's badge number, to which he replied with another two-fisted shove and he again told me to leave or face charges of obstruction of justice.

I was not looking to get arrested, but rather I simply wanted some manner of identifying the officer who had initially used excessive force on the man on the ground, then assaulted me. I backed away and waited until the two cops had carried their suspect into the paddy wagon and locked the door. Once it was clear that the officers were done arresting and securing the man in the vehicle, I again requested the officer's badge number from a distance of four or five feet.

At that point he became completely beligerent, closing the space between him and myself such that his chest was pushing me backward and I could feel his spit landing on my face as he shouted down at me that cops in London do not have to provide badge numbers because they wear nametags. His actions were not, as was suggested to me by his supervisor the following day, because he felt threatened and was trying to create space between us. Rather, his actions were to intimidate and threaten me so that I would stop requesting his badge number.

I did not stop making that request, and he then informed me that I was under arrest (for no specified charge). As the female officer was opening the door to the paddy wagon to put me in, the male cop threatened me by saying "I wish you would run on me too. I dare you to run right now." Obviously he had not quenched his need for violence for the night.

All of this ocurred in front of a crowd of on-lookers in front of Jack's Bar, who replied to my bogus arrest with chants of "fuck the police." My younger brother also witnessed the entire incident.

I was detained in a cell at the London Police Station for over two hours. Upon being released at 2:20 a.m., I was delivered a charge and a fine of $65 for public intoxication. I was not drunk, nor was I doing anything to be a nuisance (beyond requesting an officer's badge number). I was not read my rights upon being arrested, and no tests were performed to determine my sobriety. Additionally, the officer who issued this ticket was different than the one who actually arrested me--perhaps out of spite for the fact that if he had issued me a ticket, he would have had to provide me with his badge number.

The fact that I was assaulted, threatened, and incarcerated for requesting a badge number after witnessing a cop beating a suspect on the same night as a concert by the social justice-oriented band Rage/Audioslave smacks of irony. Further, the fact that I am a white twenty-something male university student speaks to the reality that anyone can be a victim of police powers.

I am in the process of filing a complaint with the Police Services Board for this officer's actions against me and the phony charges that I now face. I don't expect my complaint against officer Powers to go anywhere other than a filing cabinet, and I am disgusted that I will have to appear in court to fight trumped-up charges that were made to deter me from doing what I believe was my civic duty. These charges will wastefully consume public revenues in court and processing fees.

Be aware that even though we live in the "democratic" and peaceful country of Canada, police have discretionary powers that seriously tread on civil and human rights. I did not learn the lesson that officer Powers tried to teach me that night--and I hope that if anyone ever sees me getting beat by a cop, that they will resist the same tactics of fear used by police to prevent citizens from looking out for each other."

Random Things

I've had a number of theme-based blog posts formulate in my mind over the past month but none of them have really found their way onto the mighty internets (although they were jotted down for future usage). Therefore you'll have to make do with a small collection of random tidbits so that I can break my bloggeration hibernation, starting with the glowing floating banana pictured left.

Now, with Pierce Brosnan leaving the James Bond dynasty/lineage the next 007 film will have a new actor attempting to fill those slick shoes (that never get scuffed! I scuff my dress shoes just walking sometimes :S). I've heard a number of names going around but the man who has my vote goes by the name Jason Stratham. Actually born in London, England, just stick him in a tux and you're good to go.

On a very similar note, although one that won't have as wide an audience, the video game Hitman has gotten its own movie as well and last I checked Vin Diesel was cast as the lead man. However, once again, Jason Stratham would fit so much better in this role. The only thing that would make Vinny a better choice is that his deep voice would be better suited to 47's (the Hitman) character because 47 definately does not have an accent; however I do believe that ACTORS would be able to have some sort of control over how they speak. No big deal anyways, 47/Hitman is not a man of many words.

On a related note again, my girlfriend's younger brother is like Vin Diesel. He's a bit of a badass, looks somewhat like him (mostly nose and mouth plus the shaved head), and talks in a low growly voice. The only thing that's missing is the rather nicely built body, but if the kid bulked up he'd fill out just like Vinny I'd bet. My girlfriend's mother found me pointing this out quite entertaining but the look-a-like did not appreciate the comparison for some reason. *shrugs*

And lastly, I am officially putting my money down on the opinion that New Orleans will eventually be rebuilt when possible. They were absolutely daft to build a city there in the first place and the Americans sure as hell aren't going to let a hurricane discourage them from rebuilding. Admit defeat or error? Never!

What is "Newsworthy"?

If you have never heard of what happened in East Timor in 1975 (and years thereafter), especially if you lived through the 70s, then the media-public relationship on issues then is about the same is it is now in respect to "what is newsworthy".
"U.S. supported Indonesian rule in East Timor was marked by extreme violence and brutality. During the invasion and 27-year occupation, an estimated 100,000 to 250,000 people were killed in an initial population of about 600,000 at the time of the invasion." (Wikipedia baby!)

I'd like to now briefly compare that situation to the current situation concerning the genocide in Darfur and the amount of coverage it's receiving here in the Western World, specifically North America, by directing you to this Ablogistan post which quotes Nicholas Kristof as he points out that "Last month, CNN, Fox News, NBC, MSNBC, ABC and CBS collectively ran 55 times as many stories about Michael Jackson as they ran about genocide in Darfur".

Big bad Noam [Chomsky] has made a strong case that media coverage of East Timor was played down because it did not suit the interests of U.S. elites and I could reiterate that the general public probably knows more about Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt than Darfur, not necessarily for the same [political] reasons, but nonetheless; the point is that celebrities, runaway brides, or 10 people killed in the United States are the continuously "most important"... a sixth of the population of a country being slaughtered just doesn't cut it.

Anyways, read the Ablogistan post; it's an interesting read which not only puts blame on the government and media, but us the public as well. While you're reading it think about the fact that, I'm betting, you've never heard or were taught about East Timor.

Gravity Prone Toilet Seats

First off, I realized that I havn't posted any pictures on my blog since I got back from my trip out West (save one of my sister and I) and so I shall try to maintain a more visual aspect to this blog... starting now with a Canada-like picture I took in May.

I would now like to speak on gravity prone toilet seats. Many of us have encountered these in one of our endless and repeated trips to the bathroom throughout our lives. Girls may not know of the trials and tribulations of gravity prone toilet seats but guys do. GPTS's exist when the hinges of the toilet seat are too loose to stay up and when you lift the seat to go pee it slams back down on the toilet's rim (and thus why guys, being the ones that stand to pee more often, know of this better). The last gravity prone toilet seat I encountered was at my girlfriend's house, who at that point was a new friend that I'd met in math class. The bathroom with the GPTS was located right beside her kitchen; and I've never understood having a bathroom right beside the kitchen... who in the kitchen wants to hear another person's bathroom sounds while your preparing or eating food? Who wants to hear another person's bathroom sounds period? ("bathroom sounds" is a polite way of saying "ploops and plops" as well as "tinkles and flushes"). Anyways, at the time Lori was a cute girl from class and this was one of the first times I was at her house. Being a human I needed to use the facilities eventually and went to the GPTS rigged bathroom while she was in the kitchen. I'm trying to minimize my "bathroom sounds" since she's in the next room but before I can even proceed to produce any bathroom sounding sounds I lift up the seat, let go, and before I can react SLAM! it falls right back down onto the rim. Now I'm sure she's heard this and am a little embarassed at sounding like, after 2+ decades of living in North America, I still don't know how to use the commode. So I lift the seat again, slower this time. It falls as expected but I catch it. To make a short story that I've made long short again, I wound up leaning to the side and propping up the seat with my knee as I peed. Hooah! Man triumphs over machine again.

Gravity prone toilet seats was one of the things I previously mentioned would be coming up in a subsequent post. When I think of little ideas I jot them down; GPTS's was one of those, and another was "things spilling in bags". However, looking back upon my notes, I have no clue what kind of things spill in bags and thus cannot make any sort of informed post about things spilling in bags. Sorry.

Lastly, I'd like to plug my favourite "night" to attend. Wednesday nights at Call the Office in Londontown brings us FUNK NIGHT! Funk music all night long, a nicely mixed crowd, dancing, chillen, a patio, drinks of course if you want, and those crazy breakdancers are usually hanging around there too. Pictured to the left is one of those bboys doing a little toprock whilst sporting a shirt his gf bought him that reads "My New Fighting Technique Is Unstoppable". Helpful Hint: Things get going at funk night around 1130ish but if you come later than midnight you risk lineups.

Anyways, tis just food for thought. Something that is known to cause [serious] health damage, much like smoking, is readily accessible to the [more] impressionable youth. No, it's not chemically addicting like nicotine but we know that "looking good" and "social norms/trends" drive billions of dollars through the economy therefore they have power. Also, I would've written "beauty" in quotes...
Although maybe this whole thing wouldn't be a problem if we were all mulatto; the perfect half black / half white mix where we can still tan but rarely ever burn. :P

As you may or may not know, the amazing political musicings of Rage Against the Machine are some of my most very favourite and the song I was playing loudly while driving the other day was "Bulls on Parade". It's a song about the structure of force and authorities abusing their power. It was hot that day so I had the windows down and the tunes way up as I approached a red light and stopped beside a red and blue, a squad car, the 5-0, 5-11, rig-a-digs, the po-po, the police; playing my loud abrasive political rock. This could've been the start of a very funny blog, but alas; the light turned green, he went straight and I turned left. The end.

Those of you who saw my MSN name and came here, I hope you enjoyed that little marketing scheme. It's almost as outrageous as my silver medal for Olympic Chair Stunting Event Freestylist.

In other news, we have some neighbours that recently moved in across the road. The mom is a bit of a MILF when driving her silver convertible... but let's not get into that. The story is about her though. She had a guy in working on the pipes in the kitchen; a younger male. He says to her, "Do you know who you live across the road from?" She hadn't the slightest. "Kyler [surname]! He's one of the best breakdancers in London!" This came as quite a surprise to me as I don't know who this fellow is [yet?]. The neighbour was talking to my mom, who passed the story onto me, and was all inquisitive as to what I did that made me so famous with the laymen.
Therefore, I'm popular like the red crayon.
